Understanding the Importance of Candles in Animal Well

Candles are more than just sources of light in Animal Well; they serve a critical role in your exploration. When you light a candle, it brightens the surrounding area, keeping the darkness at bay while also warding off certain ghostly enemies. Each candle you light contributes to your overall progress in the game, as you will need to find all nine to access a hidden reward.

In total, there are nine candles dispersed throughout the game's environment, and you will need to collect nine matches to light each one. These matches can be found in various chests scattered around the map. The thrill of searching for both matches and candles adds a layer of depth to your gameplay, encouraging exploration and puzzle-solving.

Locating Matches in Animal Well

There are nine matches to collect in Animal Well. Here’s where you can find them:

1. To the left of the phone in the starting area, hop over the crank and platform and jump up into the ceiling just past the open gate to reveal a short hidden path.
2. Two screens to the left beneath the ladder to the egg room, on the middle platform in front of a mosaic mural of a fish.
3. Up the ladder, one screen from the egg room, jump over to the platform on the right, and use the Disc to hit the lever across the gap.
4. In the dog’s domain, through the maze-like alternating walls controlled by the Disc bouncing between two levers—in the bottom-left corner of the maze.
5. In the dog’s domain, one screen to the right of the save phone between two dog statues and one screen down.
6. In the dog’s domain, two screens to the right of the save phone between two dog statues and down the ladder past the descending blocks.
7. Left of the save phone behind a blocked gate, a couple of screens to the left of the bear-head fast-travel exit.
8. One room to the right of the bunny mural and down the blocked ladder, on the right-hand platform past the spikes.
9. Through the ostrich’s domain, in the room with two shielded cats guarding a chest, use your B. Wand to jump up to a hidden path in the top-left corner of the room.

Finding Candle Locations in Animal Well

To complement the matches, there are nine candles you can light in Animal Well. They can be found in the following spots:

1. To the right of the starting area’s phone, above the cranked platform.
2. In the seahorse’s domain, to the right of the save phone that leads to a puzzle involving sliding penguins. Use your B. Wand to hop up to the top-right platforms.
3. Two screens down and one to the left of the capybara save phone, in the center of the room.
4. In the ostrich’s domain, one screen to the right of the blocked ladder that has two mice and an ostrich above it.
5. In the top-right of the dark maze-like room, past the room with the white dog after getting the Disc.
6. In the dog’s domain, through the maze-like alternating walls controlled by the Disc bouncing between two levers, on the right-hand side of the maze.
7. In the center of the room beneath the room with two stretching dog statues on either side of a retaining wall holding grass.
8. In the room with the large bat, far left in the dog’s domain.
9. Down the ladder beneath the bat room in the dog’s domain, bottom-left corner of the room, hidden by alternating switches.

Unlocking the UV Lantern

After you successfully light all nine candles, a special room will become accessible just one screen left of the starting room. Here, you'll find a grid of boxes set in the wall, containing nine small candles. Lighting a candle in Animal Well will also light one of the wall candles as a reward for your efforts.

Upon lighting all nine wall candles, a gate will open beneath this grid, revealing a fish head. You will need to blow a bubble at the fish head and jump in to access a secret room. Once inside, walk right to find a hidden crank that raises a platform with a chest containing an E Medal.

Final Steps to Acquire the UV Lantern

With the E Medal secured, navigate one screen to the right of the seahorse domain’s B. Flame. Use your B. Wand to jump to a hidden path in the top-right corner of the screen. Follow the winding path, placing the E Medal into a Circular Recess, and proceed down and to the left into a room where a giant fish skeleton swims around.

As you play, the fish skeleton will blow bubbles that indicate the notes you can play on the Animal Flute. Play the correct notes while tucked away in a safe corner, and the fish skeleton will stop moving, allowing you to hop into its mouth where you'll find the coveted UV Lantern.

With the UV Lantern in your possession, head to the egg room after collecting all the eggs in the game. Use the lantern on your egg collection to unveil another cryptic mystery waiting to be solved in Animal Well.
