Choosing Between Anansi And Onyankopon In Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance

Choosing Between Anansi And Onyankopon In Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance

By the time you get to the Shinjuku Ward, you’ll probably be used to choosing between two sides in Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. This time, we have the choice between Anansi or his father Onyankopon, each representing different alignments and consequences in the game. The decisions you make can shape your gameplay experience significantly, leading to various outcomes and alliances.

In Vengeance, the Shinjuku Ward introduces a unique scenario where players must navigate through a complex moral landscape. After encountering Mastema in the main storyline, players will find themselves in front of the Shinjuku 3rd Block leyline, where Anansi awaits. He is not there by default; you must have completed the “Tough Love” side quest in Shinagawa, where you and Anansi competed to defeat Basilisks. If you’ve successfully completed this quest, Anansi will approach you for assistance.

Upon meeting Anansi, he will present you with the “Reclaim the Golden Stool” quest. In this quest, Anansi seeks your help to deal with his father, Onyankopon, who opposes Anansi’s ambitions. Anansi provides you with the location of Onyankopon near the Shinjuku 1st Block leyline, setting the stage for a pivotal confrontation.

To find Onyankopon, players should head north from the leyline and navigate through the blocks. Eventually, you will encounter Onyankopon standing on a stone. Here, you have the option to either attack him immediately or listen to what he has to say. If you choose to listen, Onyankopon will express his concerns that Anansi has lost his way and that you must recover the Golden Stool, thus putting you in direct conflict with Anansi.

Choosing whether to side with Anansi or Onyankopon isn’t just a matter of preference; it significantly impacts your gameplay. You can meet them in any order, but your decision to attack one will permanently invalidate the other’s quest, so think carefully about your choice! Siding with Onyankopon will boost your Law alignment, while siding with Anansi will increase your Chaos alignment. This decision can affect the game's ending, so consider which side aligns with your gameplay style.

If you don’t mind which ending you experience first, Anansi is often the stronger choice in battle. He boasts powerful Dark-type moves and useful skills like Fire Block, making him a valuable ally against various opponents in the game. Meanwhile, Onyankopon, while having healing abilities, is significantly weaker in offensive capabilities and has a physical vulnerability that can hinder his effectiveness in combat.

Moreover, the battle mechanics against these two demons differ. Anansi may inflict ailments and use Dark-type attacks, while Onyankopon can heal himself and set up defenses, complicating the fight. Usually, players find Anansi to be a quicker battle, whereas defeating Onyankopon can require more strategy and timing.

Both Anansi and Onyankopon provide decent challenges, and upon defeating one, you can recruit the other into your team, which adds to the strategic depth of the game. Once you have completed their quests, both can also be fused in Special Fusions, giving you flexibility in your demon roster. However, remember that if you skip the early choices, such as not accepting the girl's hand at the game's start, you may have to wait until a New Game+ cycle to add these powerful demons to your compendium.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is available now, ready for players to delve into its rich story and complex character dynamics.
